It all started with the first Moomin story, Moomins and the Great Flood, published in 1945.

Tove Jansson wrote the book during World War II as a fairy tale to comfort herself during dark times, and it reflects the reality of millions of people who found themselves fleeing and seeking refuge. The story follows Moominmamma and Moomintroll as they search for a new home and the missing Moominpappa. Eventually, they end up in what will become known as Moominvalley. The first story also introduces you to a particular house, where many of the stories take place over the years. The Moominhouse is a symbol of safety, protection and belonging. These are universal and timeless needs that are as relevant today as they were 80 years ago. The door is always open.
